The Energetic Drain: Why Bathrooms Pose a Challenge

From a Feng Shui perspective, bathrooms and toilets are certainly problematic. The toilet acts like a drain, siphoning energy out of the home. The drains in bathtubs and sinks have a similar effect. Thus, while the bathroom serves a cleansing and refreshing purpose, a portion of the home's energy flows out along with the dirty water.

A look back: how "dirty" energy was handled in the past

Viewed in this light, it made perfect sense that, until the early 20th century, houses were built with toilets located outside the living quarters—often on a mezzanine level. Farmhouses, too, typically placed the outhouse in the garden behind the building. People intuitively ensured that dirty energy remained outside their living spaces, allowing positive Chi to be retained within their home.

That is of course unthinkable today. Quite the opposite: modern bathrooms are equipped with everything the heart desires. From rainfall showers to spacious bathtubs, bidets, and toilets, we design these oases of well-being as places to refresh ourselves—whether to start the day feeling relaxed or to sink into the pillows after a soothing bath.

It is all the more important, then, to put a stop to this energy drain. The most effective (and most easy) method is to keep the toilet lid closed. Furthermore, the bathroom should always be kept tidy and clean, and leaking fixtures should be promptly replaced or repaired.

Elements, colors, and light: keeping the Chi flowing

Natural materials—such as baskets, bamboo, and wood—along with plants and good lighting, help keep energy levels high. The bathroom's color scheme is also important; this depends on which Bagua area the bathroom or toilet is located in and which element corresponds to your birth chart.

By the way - the floral wallpaper you see in the photo is a wonderful example of how to strengthen the wood element, which energetically counteracts the flowing water.

Beware of generalized Feng Shui advice

It is important to know that the specific Feng Shui measures needed to retain energy in your bathroom depend primarily on its location within the floor plan.

For instance, if your bathroom is located in the north (the Water/Career area), an excess of blue or black tones will intensify the draining of energy. In this case, earth tones help to gently slow down the water element.

However, your individual constitution also plays a crucial role: if, for instance, you are a so-called "fire" type and your bathroom is located in the "recognition" area, the Feng Shui design will—exceptionally—require shades of orange, pink, or red.
